THIS BEAUTY

You can’t keep

This beauty;

It will be gone

Before

You can say

“Mine…”

California Coast - Beaches

California Day Big Sur, May 08

A sky
From which
You cannot
Look away–
The same
Is true
Of the sea
And you wonder
If they are
One and
The same;
California day
A white beach
Wave-embraced
Like hands
That hold you
And deliver you
To shore
Each one
You take;
Trails to meadows
With their view
Of islands–
The children
Of horizons…
Pay attention
Watch over
Them all
From the flowery
Sage and poppy ridges
Imagine hours
That unfold
Warm sun on
Salty skin–salt
From the sea
Salt from
A mountain ascent
Salt that
Washes away
In a wild stream
As you dive in–
Drink deeply, be
Thirsty for
The splendor
Of this
California day.

California Coast - Beaches

Blue Backdrop

(Gone Surfing)

The predawn stars

Were blue and green

Later on it seemed

The sun

Was on a string;

We pulled it down

At will, warming

Every ride

From Outer Misto

Towards the reefs inside

And paddling back again

In the distance

Swept by the wind

Mountains shined, immaculate

Across the glassy sea

With snow-capped peaks

We could almost reach

And the reflections touched us

Reverberating in our days

From Joe’s to the Osa

And every session at Dume

With the Santa Ana

Canyon scent of sage;

Now a pink mist evaporates

On another paddle back

Smelling of sweet ocean

And yellow dune flowers –

The water so clear

You can see the cobblestones

Down deep as they roll

And erode – here I go, too

A jade green swell

Rises from the kelp

And I am gone…
